Why North Vietnam is perfect for solo female travelers?

North Vietnam is a diverse region offering everything from vibrant city life in Hanoi to the beauty of Ha Long Bay and the mountainous wonders of Sapa. With a well-developed tourism infrastructure, affordable prices, and friendly locals and user friendly transport system, it’s an ideal destination for solo female travelers. Plus, Vietnam is generally considered safe for women traveling alone.

Traveling solo around Vietnam for a few weeks, I’ve felt incredibly safe, even while exploring at night. It’s also easy to connect with other solo travelers wherever you go, especially through group tours that bring people together effortlessly. The locals are warm and welcoming, and while I’ve sometimes encountered language barriers, I’ve always found the help and recommendations I needed. Vietnam is an ideal choice for a first solo trip, offering a mix of adventure and ease that makes it perfect if you’re unsure where to begin.

1. Best places to visit in North Vietnam

If you’re traveling solo for the first time, these top destinations should be on your list:

  • Hanoi: Begin your adventure in Vietnam's vibrant capital, where history meets modern life. Hanoi offers a rich blend of ancient temples, French colonial architecture, and trendy cafes. In the Old Quarter (highly recommended for accommodation), you’ll find bustling markets and an array of delicious street food. Nearby, Hoan Kiem Lake provides a peaceful escape from the city’s energy. Hanoi is also full of remarkable temples and museums, making it the ideal place to immerse yourself in Vietnamese culture and cuisine. If time allows, join a guided street food tour – it's an experience you won’t regret!

  • Ha Long Bay: This UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its limestone karsts, is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. A boat cruise around the bay is a must, with opportunities for kayaking, cave exploration, and swimming. Though I took a full-day boat tour through GetYourGuide due to limited time (a great option if you're on a schedule), Ha Long Bay can be quite crowded. If you have more flexibility, consider a 2- or 3-day cruise for a deeper experience, as there are plenty of affordable multi-day options.

  • Sapa: For nature lovers, Sapa is a treasure, offering sweeping terraced rice fields and the charm of ethnic minority villages. A trek here is both visually stunning and culturally enriching. Guided treks with homestays allow you to experience local life and connect with the welcoming Sapa women. If you’re planning a visit, book a luxury night bus from Hanoi through 12Go Asia you’ll have a comfortable bed and arrive well-rested. Many guesthouses can also arrange hiking tours, so you’ll have a guide meet you at the bus station, take you on an incredible mountain hike (including lunch), and then lead you to your guesthouse, all while introducing you to the unique culture of Sapa’s communities.

  • Ninh Binh: Often called "Ha Long Bay on land" Ninh Binh is a peaceful area known for its limestone cliffs and vibrant rice paddies. It’s less crowded than Ha Long Bay, making it ideal for a serene solo escape. I visited Ninh Binh on a well-organized day trip from Hanoi, which is a good option if you're short on time but want to maximize your experience. However, if you have an extra day, I’d recommend staying overnight to explore more of this scenic region. Guesthouses here are extremely affordable, and the area has much to offer.

2. How to stay safe as a solo female traveler in North Vietnam

While North Vietnam is relatively safe, it’s always good to take precautions when traveling solo. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Stay alert: Like any tourist destination, be mindful of your belongings in crowded places, particularly in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. Petty theft can occur, especially in busy areas.

  • Dress respectfully: Vietnam is a conservative country, especially in rural areas. While it’s okay to wear casual clothing in the cities, it’s respectful to cover your shoulders and knees when visiting temples or rural areas.

  • Use reputable transportation: I highly recommend using Grab to get around in cities, as it’s convenient, reliable, and straightforward. In more rural areas like Sapa, where Grab may not be available, you’ll likely need to negotiate transportation. Be sure to agree on pricing upfront to avoid misunderstandings. For traveling between cities, you can easily book bus tickets through 12Go Asia, which offers a range of options and makes planning seamless. Alternatively, consider booking domestic flights, as Vietnam’s local airlines offer affordable fares, even for last-minute bookings

3. Accommodation tips for solo female travelers

Finding safe and comfortable accommodation is key for a solo trip. North Vietnam offers a wide range of options, from budget hostels to boutique hotels:

  • Hostels and guesthouses: For solo travelers, hostels are a great way to meet other people. Look for hostels or guesthouses with high reviews and a good reputation from solo travelers and for female safety. Many hostels in Hanoi and Sapa even have female-only dorms.

  • Homestays in Sapa: If you’re heading to Sapa, staying with a local family in a homestay is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the culture. Not only do you get a glimpse of rural life, but you also support local communities.

  • Hotels: For a bit more comfort and privacy, boutique hotels in Hanoi, Ninh Binh but also Sapa, offer modern amenities at reasonable prices. Websites like Booking.com or Agoda can help you find trusted accommodations with strong security and great service. If you're looking for a 4 starts hotel for a great price, I recommend you Azure Sapa Hotel in Sapa and Classy Holiday Hotel & Spa in the Hanoi's best area.

4. Navigating language barriers in Vietnam

While English is widely spoken in touristy areas, you may encounter language barriers in more rural parts of North Vietnam. Here are a few tips to manage:

  • Use translation apps: Apps like Google Translate or iTranslate can help you communicate more effectively when needed. Most Vietnamese are happy to assist once they see you are making the effort.

  • Learn basic Vietnamese phrases: Knowing a few key phrases in Vietnamese can go a long way. “Cảm ơn” (thank you) and “Xin chào” (hello) will make interactions smoother and more pleasant.

  • Travel with a local guide: If you’re visiting remote areas like Sapa, hiring a local guide can enhance your experience and ease communication. Guides often speak English and can help navigate rural routes and it’s also a great way of knowing more about all the amazing places you will visit.

5. Solo dining in Vietnam

Vietnam is famous for its food, and as a solo traveler, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore the local cuisine. Street food is particularly popular in Hanoi, with dishes like Pho (noodle soup) and Banh mi (baguette sandwiches) being must-tries.

  • Eat at local markets: Solo dining can sometimes feel daunting, but Vietnamese markets are bustling with solo eaters. Grab a small plastic stool and dive into local dishes alongside the locals.

  • Join food tours: If you’re unsure where to start with Vietnamese cuisine, consider joining a food tour. It’s a great way to try a variety of dishes while meeting other travelers. There are plenty of options on Get Your Guide or Guru Walk and you can even book one of those last minute.

6. Essential packing tips for North Vietnam

  • Comfortable walking shoes: Whether you’re exploring Hanoi’s busy streets or trekking in Sapa, a pair of good walking shoes is essential.

  • Layered clothing: North Vietnam’s climate varies by season. Pack light, breathable clothing for the summer and layers for the cooler months, especially if you’re heading into the mountains.

  • Travel insurance: It’s always a good idea to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, theft, and trip cancellations. Companies like World Nomads or SafetyWing are popular among digital nomads and solo travelers.

7. Stay connected

Having internet access is essential for navigating and staying in touch. A local SIM card can easily be purchased at Hanoi’s airport, where affordable data plans are available. Viettel and Mobifone are two reliable providers with good coverage across North Vietnam. I initially skipped getting a SIM at the airport and found it a bit challenging to locate one in the city, so if you encounter a similar issue, try checking in Hanoi’s popular tourist areas or local travel agencies where SIM cards are often sold.

If you’d rather have data as soon as you land, consider purchasing an eSIM from Airalo. New users can get a $3 discount on their first purchase through this link.
